Safety Improvements Now Under Construction

Changes are coming to 2nd Street, one of the most dangerous streets in the city for people walking.

Now under construction, the city’s Second Street Improvement Project includes many safety changes that Walk San Francisco advocated for. These include:

• Restricting left turns, which are notoriously dangerous for pedestrians.
• The removal of the slip lane for auto traffic turning right at 2nd and Harrison. This shortcut for vehicles increases speeds and is challenging for people who are visually impaired.
• Wider sidewalks, including corner bulb-outs.
• Better lighting along the sidewalk to make it inviting and easier to navigate for people walking.
• ADA-compliant curb ramps.
• Raised crossings across the protected bike lane, which will keep pedestrians visible and slow bicyclists at the same time.

The project is slated for completion by the end of 2019. We are eager for the greater safety it will bring, plus the project will showcase many of the safety improvements we need to bring to all of San Francisco’s most dangerous streets, including others in SoMa.
