Exploring Central SoMa: A Survey of Streets, Subways and Open Spaces
September 4, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm
Join veteran, volunteer walk leader and Walk SF member, Eric Chase for an enlightening tour of one of the most rapidly and dramatically-evolving areas of the City.
The walk will start at a transit-friendly location near Market (refer to WHERE below), and navigate the neighborhood South of Market between 2nd and 6th Street, which falls under the San Francisco’s Central SoMa (previously Central Corridor) zoning plan. The City is planning for the new Central Subway to be a backbone for denser (including high-rises) development in this rapidly-changing area.
Stops to highlight the goals and direction of the Central SoMA plan will include the 5M and Flower Mart sites, as well as buildings under construction. In addition, the walk will cover the current state of pedestrian infrastructure, open space and traffic-circulation in the plan area, and what plans are in place to improve the current conditions and transition the neighborhood from one, known for its dangerous arterial streets, to one for people walking, biking and taking transit.
The walk will end at 21st Amendment for an optional lunch.
