AB 550 passed its first hurdle – here’s what’s next
Earlier this week, AB 550 faced its first hurdle at the Assembly Transportation Committee.
Forty people waited more than THREE HOURS to share their support for AB 550. Many of these people had lost loved ones in traffic crashes, or had survived severe crashes themselves. Caller after caller made it clear: we need life-saving speed safety systems on our streets.
I’m thrilled to share that AB 550 passed out of the Committee with a 12-0 vote.
The next stop for AB 550 is the Assembly Appropriations Committee. As AB 550 moves toward a full vote on the Assembly floor sometime before June 4, things are going to get a lot tougher.
That means we need to build statewide support for AB 550. Here’s how you can help right now.
- We need legislators in every part of the state hearing from their constituents in support of AB 550. >>EMAIL YOUR ASSEMBLYMEMBER (and share this with friends around the state)
- We need to share the stories of people who have been directly impacted by speed-related crashes in a variety of ways. >>SHARE OUR STORY COLLECTION FORM
This first victory is a testament to the power of our voices. Let’s keep it up until we #PassAB550!
A special thanks to members of San Francisco Bay Area Families for Safe Streets. This group was instrumental in Assemblymember David Chiu’s first attempt to pass speed safety system legislation in 2017, and they continue to be incredible champions.
