Dear Assemblymember Wicks,

I’m writing to urge you to move AB 2276 (Soria), the Stop Super Speeders Act, out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee to help save lives from dangerous speeding.

Year after year, speeding is the #1 cause of severe and fatal traffic crashes in California, killing more than 1,000 Californians. And the threat is rising. The pandemic unleashed more frequent, extreme speeding and reckless driving, and these trends have continued. New vehicles can reach high speeds in just a few seconds.

The Stop Super Speeders Act would require what’s called ‘active Intelligent Speed Assistance’ to be installed in the vehicles of drivers convicted of severe speeding-related offenses. This is a preventative approach that acknowledges the fact that 75% of drivers with suspended licenses continue to drive.

California desperately needs more tools to address dangerous driving and protect communities. Plus, traffic crashes are costing our state approximately $29 billion per year.

You have been a strong supporter of solutions to make streets safer. Your role as the Assembly Appropriations Chair and AB 2276 offers a powerful chance to continue this!
