All SFUSD school zones now have painted ‘daylighting’ for safer kids!
Right in time for the start of the school year, the SFMTA completed what’s called ‘daylighting’ at every SFUSD school zone in San Francisco.
This is fantastic news! We’re so happy that we made this video of Zoey the Zebra, our mascot for safe intersections.
Daylighting is a simple but powerful tool to make streets much safer – especially for people crossing the street, but for everyone. Daylighting prevents 1 in 3 traffic crashes at intersections by ensuring clear sightlines. Learn more about daylighting.
A 2023 state law means that it’s now illegal for all California drivers to park within 20 feet of any marked or unmarked crosswalk at the corners where their vehicle faces the crosswalk. But because most drivers still don’t know about this state law, the Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a resolution last winter urging the SFMTA to mark all daylighting zones with red paint so that drivers know not to park there.
Last winter, the SFMTA committed to complete painted daylighting citywide by the end of 2026, which Walk SF applauds.
The SFMTA paint crew started with SFUSD school zones, which they completed citywide a few weeks ago in time for the school year. At a couple of schools, the kids got to help paint the curbs, too! Check out videos from New Traditions Elementary School and McKoppin Elementary School.
The safety benefits of citywide daylighting will be significant. And this solution is needed more than ever given how much bigger vehicles are these days, making them harder to see around. Just imagine a child stepping into a crosswalk but there’s a large SUV parked right where they’re entering: so dangerous.
As Walk SF continues to watchdog the SFMTA’s commitment, it’s so important that SFMTA leaders hear ongoing public support for daylighting.
So please: send an email to SFMTA to thank them for completing daylighting in SFUSD school zones and to keep up the good work to fully harness this solution.
