What’s next for winning a forever car-free JFK Drive
Yesterday was the one-year anniversary of a car-free JFK Drive every day, 24 hours a day. We took a lunchtime walk to celebrate, and even midday on a weekday, people constantly streamed by. Check out the photo gallery below.
This should be the first of many anniversaries of a car-free JFK Drive… but we know there are no guarantees that will be the case.
Walk San Francisco is pushing for a forever car-free JFK Drive and for overdue solutions so that those who have limited mobility or means can access all the park’s attractions. That includes things like rethinking and expanding the free shuttle and transit routes to the park, plus better utilization of the 800-spot parking garage. And it’s time to address the streets bordering Golden Gate Park, all of which are currently on the city’s list of most dangerous streets.
This spring, Walk SF was part of a stakeholder group led by the San Francisco County Transportation Authority (SFCTA) looking at what’s needed to support the improved access and experience for all in Golden Gate Park. The framework developed by the stakeholder group will be presented to the Board of Supervisors at the May 11 SFCTA meeting. This meeting is an opportunity to show broad support for a permanent car-free JFK Drive.
