Supervisor Melgar introduced the ‘Street Safety Act.’ Show your support September 8!

 In Uncategorized

On Tuesday night, District 7 Supervisor Melgar introduced the Street Safety Act: a resolution to bring action and accountability to traffic safety.

Thank goodness. And thank you, Supervisor Melgar.

The City’s Vision Zero policy expired six months ago – and there hasn’t been a new interagency traffic safety plan since 2021. The threat we face as pedestrians is all too real and growing. Vehicles are bigger, heavier, and more powerful, and dangerous driving behavior is rampant. It’s a deadly combination.

Supervisor Melgar’s resolution reaffirms San Francisco’s prior Vision Zero commitment to end severe and fatal traffic crashes – and this is crucial. Without this core commitment as a city, traffic safety will not be prioritized. It’s that simple. Zero is still, and always will be, the right goal.

But Supervisor Melgar’s resolution includes more than a commitment. It has a suite of targeted actions for key agencies to design and enforce streets for safety.

This is everything from leaning into automated enforcement, evolving the Vision Zero approach to be more systematic, reforming the Residential Traffic Calming program, and requirements so if a street is paved or repainted, it’s left with more safety fixes than it started with. There are deadlines, public dashboards, and some serious red-tape cutting so street safety projects happen faster.

Now it’s time to get every single Supervisor to support the Street Safety Act.

The resolution will be heard at the Land Use and Transportation Committee on Monday, September 8 at 1:30PM and to the full Board of Supervisors for a vote on Tuesday, September 9. The Land Use and Transportation hearing is the only chance to give public comment in support of this much-needed resolution.
