Back to School with Safer Routes to School

Good News for Back-to-School

The beginning of the school year on Monday is the perfect time of year to remind residents that, thanks to Walk SF and its members, San Francisco adopted 15-MPH speed limits around 181 schools last year.
To ensure that drivers slow down and make the streets safe for kids walking to school,Walk SF reached out to the Mayor and the San Francisco Police Department to request a public speed enforcement campaign for the start of the school year.
In response, the police announced special back-to-school traffic enforcement focusing on elementary schools throughout the city, enforcing the 15-mph school speed limits with extra patrols around schools during peak times this week. Email Police Chief Suhr to say thanks!

In addition, the SFMTA grew its school crossing guard program by 45 new guards, boosting its team to 195 this school year. The new guards will help children walking along streets with high volumes of traffic, mid-block crossings, and intersections that don’t currently have signals.
