Walk & Roll to School Toolkit 2023

5 Steps to a Successful Walk & Roll to School Day

1. Recruit a Walk & Roll to School Day Organizer.

Identify an interested parent, caregiver, teacher, or school staff who can be the point person for your event. The organizer should sign up your school ASAP for important updates and support.

2. Pick a date during the week of October 2 – 6 to be the big day!

Most SFUSD schools will hold their event on Wednesday, October 4, but you can pick whatever date is best for your school community.

3. OPTIONAL: Coordinate ‘walking school buses’ or ‘bike trains’.

Determine a meeting point/s and time/s for kids to join a group of adult walk or bike leaders safely getting the group to school. This is something you can continue after Walk & Roll to School Week.

Wondering how to get a walking school bus going?

Contact Malena (malena@walksf.org) or join Walk SF and Safe Routes to School for a webinar on Zoom Tuesday, September 26th at 5:00 pm (in Spanish, RSVP here) and 6:00 pm (in English, RSVP here).

4. Get the word out on your Walk & Roll to School Day.

Hang posters, share info through your school’s newsletter or email messaging, make school-wide announcements to students and at Back to School Night, and more! Your school will receive posters in late September. Download graphics, the 11 x 17 poster, and sample language.

5. Get ready for the big morning!

Plan for making the morning of Walk & Roll to School Day a celebration. Be sure there’s a reminder the week and day before to students and caregivers. Consider a friendly competition between classrooms for greatest participation. Download a tracking sheet to mark how students arrive at school that morning.

After your event, be sure your organizer submits your school’s participation to malena@walksf.org by 4:00PM on Wednesday, October 12. Want to keep the momentum going? Contact Josie Dominguez-Chan, School Engagement Coordinator.
