Dear Mayor Lurie, Thank you for taking real action to end severe and fatal traffic crashes in San Francisco by signing your Street Safety Initiative executive order and declaring that safety is non-negotiable for our city. The fact that more than 500 people are severely injured and 30-40 are killed each year in traffic crashes is unacceptable. San Francisco can and should be the most pedestrian-friendly city in the United States. Safe streets will make our city that much better for everyone who lives in and visits San Francisco. I applaud you for taking a Safe Systems, data-driven, multiagency approach to this urgent public health crisis and for establishing a Street Safety Task Force in your office. Your leadership, especially holding agencies accountable to deliver safety projects faster, will save lives. In the first decade of Vision Zero, San Francisco implemented many of the solutions needed, from lowering speed limits and installing speed cameras to redesigning many dangerous intersections and deadly streets. But solutions aren’t yet at the scale and layers needed to succeed. You can change that, Mayor Lurie, and write an incredible success story for our city!
