Dear Julie Kirschbaum, Transportation Director and the SFMTA Board of Directors, We all deserve to be able to cross the street safely in San Francisco, and need every possible solution to protect people in and near intersections. I want to thank the SFMTA for acting quickly to paint daylighting in all SFUSD school zones and its commitment to bring this citywide by December 2026. This will make a meaningful difference for safety, and you have my support! To maximize the lifesaving potential of daylighting, I also urge you to: 1. Commit to do ‘hardened daylighting’ with protective posts in all daylighting zones on the high-injury network by 2030. Daylighting is one of the best tools the city has in hand to accelerate progress on Vision Zero. I’m inspired by Hoboken, New Jersey, which has had zero traffic fatalities in seven years, and has hardened daylighting – with paint and protective posts – at every intersection. 2. Work with agencies to create a sanctioned program so residents can apply to install and maintain amenities within a daylit spot (such as planters) to create ‘hardened daylighting’ that also creates neighborhood benefits on appropriate streets. Thank you for embracing this golden opportunity to make every intersection much safer!
