Our Walks

What a City to Walk In!

There’s simply no city like San Francisco when it comes to walking. Whether you’re exploring a hidden alley or are taking in the view from atop of one of the city’s hills, there are endless sides of the city that can only be fully experienced as a pedestrian.

Need ideas and routes for the best walks to do in San Francisco?

For two decades, Walk SF has offered a wide range of walks exploring every corner of San Francisco. So check out the options below and get walking today!

Our Self-Guided, Member-Only Walks

One of the perks of being a Walk SF member is you get free, self-guided routes designed by our expert WalkLab volunteers ~4 times per year. These walks are ~2-4 miles in length, and include turn-by-turn directions plus fun facts and nearby destinations to check out.

Become a Walk SF member with a gift of $52 or more to get access right now to our most recent walk. Your membership receipt will include a link and code.

Our Premier Walks

Each fall, we host Peak2Peak – the ultimate urban walking adventure. Each year, our WalkLab volunteers create a top-secret, unique route exploring hidden trails, stunning vistas, and off-the-beaten-path treasures in our beautiful city. We now offer self-guided and supported options for this always-sells-out hike. Learn more about Peak2Peak.

Each spring, we host an additional walk – and these are always epic. Save the date on May 3, 2025 for the 3rd Annual SF Stair Challenge. This walk will be a unique, scenic physical challenge connecting some of San Francisco’s best stairways into one incredible route! Learn more about the SF Stair Challenge.

Our Circle the City walk traveled an incredible route along the entire perimeter of the city in six hikes! Our 49 Mile Scenic Walk was inspired by and made possible thanks to Kristine Poggioli and Carolyn Eidson, authors of Walking San Francisco’s 49 Mile Scenic Drive.

The 2022 Golden City Odyssey explored sections of the Crosstown Trail in a 35-mile route, divided into five separate 5- to 9-mile loops.

Be sure you get our newsletter so you don’t miss these epic walks, or check out our events calendar. Email events@walksf.org to learn more about sponsoring our premier walks.

Accessible Walks

We endeavor to make our walking events ADA accessible whenever possible. At least one of our self-guided member walks each year is fully ADA accessible, with low-grade, paved surfaces so people using wheelchairs or mobility devices can enjoy the routes.

For Walk SF members with mobility challenges, please contact us at membership@walksf.org and we can share access to past accessible walks. Our long hikes like Peak2Peak are not accessible due to the type of trails used on many sections (which may be steep, uneven, or unpaved).

Please email events@walksf.org if you have any questions, feedback, or ideas in regards to our accessible walks.

About WalkLab, Our Walk Experts

So how do we continue to create new walks that even the most seasoned walker will love?

It’s because of WalkLab: the group of expert volunteers that leave no path undiscovered. This brain trust of wonderful folks donate their time to make Walk SF’s walks so special. Not only do they know every neighborhood in the city, they bring history, creativity, and San Francisco spirit to each walk.

They never disappoint, and we are indebted to them!
