Rediscover San Francisco’s Commons

On Sunday, July 16th, join David Giesen, for an enlightening, two-mile walk through the heart of the city’s civic, cultural, judicial, and arts institutions.
The walk starts at eastern edge of the Civic Center, in front of the 2.5-acre pedestrian space dedicated to the United Nations Plaza and host to the Heart of the City Farmer’s Market, the only independent, farmer-operated non-profit farmer’s market that provides critical fresh and healthy food options to the low-income neighborhoods of the Tenderloin and SoMa.
Historical highlights along the walk include not only the namesakes of monuments such as the Hiram Johnson State Office Building, Herbst Theater, and Exposition Auditorium, but also the deeper social, political, and economic histories behind many of the architectural icons that define the city’s center of government.
The two-hour walk will offer a closer look at the Bolivar Monument and retrace a portion of the route Frederick Law Olmsted planned in 1866, as a proposed greenway trail from Aquatic Park to the Panhandle. In addition, participants will learn about a major city-led, planning effort to redesign the entire 15-acre landscape from City Hall to the U.N. Plaza to realize this open space’s potential as the commons for San Franciscans.
Discover how initiatives like Knitting the Commons (a temporary art installation), community gardens, the Tenderloin Healthy Corner Store Coalition, the Safer Taylor Street Project and effective land-use planning can help build a strong foundation for equitable economic growth and more livable neighborhoods.
The walk ends at the Please Touch Community Garden.
When? Walk SF’s monthly members walk begins on Sunday, July 16th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. – walk will proceed rain or shine, barring high winds or dangerous weather.
Where? Location: The United Nations Plaza Fountain
What to Bring?
- Wear closed-toe, comfortable shoes
- Carry rain gear and sunhat as needed
- Stock sunblock, water, and personal snacks
Entrance Fee: FREE for Walk SF members; $10 minimum donation per person for non-members.
