Last Sunday Streets of 2013
Help end the season with a bang!
Did you know Walk San Francisco was one of the founding organizers of Sunday Streets, along with the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, and the current presenters Livable City, and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency?
Since 2008, Sunday Streets has grown from two events to 10, reclaiming miles of city streets as car-free, safe, shared public space for the enjoyment of tens of thousands of people who walk, ride, and play on these transformed streetscapes in more than 20 of the city’s distinct and diverse neighborhoods. Today, Sunday Streets is the nation’s largest community-oriented initiative promoting open streets and the benefits of active transportation.
Before the year’s Sunday Streets ends, stop by to say hi this weekend! From the Embarcadero to the Great Highway, Fillmore Street to 3rd Street, Walk SF Ambassadors are always on hand at Sunday Streets to encourage people-powered movement, and build awareness for the need for safer streets. With streets making up 25% of the land mass in the city, Sunday Streets is a great demonstration of how streets don’t just have to be dangerous places where fast traffic is racing — they can be welcoming and safe.
When you visit the Walk SF table, you can learn about the Pedestrian Strategy, and find out if you live, work, or travel along one of the city’s high-injury corridors. Plus, be sure to take advantage of the Sunday Streets membership special and walk away with a beautiful San Francisco’s Walker’s Map and the iconic, “I Walk SF” t-shirt, available when you join. Or, simply sign up to learn more about street improvement projects in your neighborhood and citywide initiatives like Walk to Work Day, Walk and Roll to School Day, and Peak2Peak, which make it safe and fun for you, your family, and your friends to walk in San Francisco.
Don’t Miss the First Ever, Richmond Sunday Streets
On Sunday, October 27, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., there will be tons of activities happening on Clement Street, from Funston to Arguello, and on Arguello, from Clement to Fulton. The Clement Street Merchants will be hosting a Halloween costume parade, and the Richmond YMCA will be offering parachute games, setting up an obstacle course, and hosting 10 minute Zumba classes between 12 to 2 p.m..
Check out pop-ups from Purusha Yoga, Wild Equity Institute, San Francisco Sea Scouts, and tons more!
Plus, at noon, you can meet up with Supervisor Eric Mar at Velo Rouge Cafe, for his inaugural tour of Richmond’s Sunday Streets. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the Supervisor’s efforts around pedestrian improvements, including Clement Street’s first parklet, and the recent Public Safety committee hearing on San Francisco Police Department investigation procedures for pedestrian- and bicycle-related traffic collisions. Walk, bike, or scoot along the route from Velo Rouge, north to Clement, then turn west—pass the new parklet—to the end at Park Presidio.
Visit the Sunday Streets site for a list of all of the planned activities.
