2026 Peak2Peak: a record-breaking day off the beaten sidewalk (PHOTOS!)
Peak2Peak 2026 was one for the books! A record-breaking 320+ crowd joined us for 10 peaks, 10 miles (confession: it was closer to 11), and a route that took us into new corners of San Francisco, from Portola and Visitacion Valley to Bayview and Hunters Point. We explored streets and paths that were firsts for Peak2Peak, discovered plenty of unexpected gems along the way, and proved once again that there’s always more city to uncover on foot.
A peaky San Francisco tradition
Peak2Peak’s returning ranks keep growing. Friends bring friends, families make it a tradition, and colleagues come back year after year. At this point, we’re pretty sure Peak2Peak is “a thing.” But this year also brought a big wave of solo adventurers, many of whom arrived knowing no one and left with a whole new Peak2Peak family. Somehow, 10-ish miles of walking always has a way of turning strangers into friends. And then there were the dogs. More four-legged Peak2Peakers than ever joined the fun, many proudly sporting their event bandanas.
An epic route full of plot twists
This year’s route delivered on our promise to show even longtime San Franciscans something new. We wandered through the wooded wilds of McLaren Park, climbed to the secluded peaks and sweeping views on Bayview Hill, took in the whimsical slides and sundial at Hilltop Park, and explored the enchanting art and gardens of the Visitacion Valley Greenway and Portola’s Green Between. From start to finish, there was always another surprise around the corner, even for those who can navigate their Muni route in their sleep.
Where the route meets the mission
But the route was more than a new set of peaks and parks. It gave us a firsthand look at how neighborhoods in southeastern San Francisco can feel cut off from the rest of the city by roads and freeways like 101 and 280, with connections that often rely on streets and walkways that feel, and can be, unsafe for people on foot. By supporting Peak2Peak, you’re helping Walk SF keep pushing for safer streets and better ways to get around the city.

A standing ovation for the folks who made it happen
Peak2Peak doesn’t happen by itself. It takes a small army of good-humoured, dedicated humans to bring 320+ walkers, 10 peaks, and a whole lot of logistics together.
Our incredible volunteers showed up with big energy and plenty of smiles, helping with everything from materials prep, registration, and route support to lunch, snacks, and finish-line festivities. You made a big day look effortless.
And to our fantastic walk leaders: thank you for setting such a welcoming and encouraging tone, keeping spirits high, and making sure everyone felt part of the group. Your energy, care, and camaraderie are a huge part of what makes Peak2Peak special.
A special shoutout to Karen Rhodes and the WalkLab crew for imagining, scouting, testing, and fine-tuning this year’s bold new route. Taking Peak2Peak into new corners of southeastern San Francisco made this year’s adventure one to remember.
