Join us on Tuesday, August 6 for ‘no turn on red’ vote at the SFMTA Board

 In Uncategorized

Vote will determine bringing this safety-first solution to more intersections across San Francisco

Turning drivers create dangerous scenarios for us as pedestrians. The data confirms this: here in San Francisco, drivers turning at lights account for 20% of pedestrian- or bicycle-related injury crashes (source: SFMTA).

‘No turn on red’ is a pedestrian-first solution that people can safely cross the street without the threat of turning traffic. And all it takes is a simple sign, like the one you see above.

For years, Walk SF has strongly advocated for a no-turn-on-red policy focused on the high-injury network – the 12% of streets where 68% of traffic crashes occur.

We are supporting the SFMTA’s proposal to prioritize bringing no-turn-on-red to intersections based on the following criteria:

  • High pedestrian activity, defined as having at least one pedestrian in the intersection per signal cycle
  • Whether the intersection is on the high-injury network, the 12% of streets where 68% of traffic crashes occur
  • Whether the intersection has lead a pedestrian interval, which give pedestrians additional time to cross after a red light

The SFMTA Board will vote on this proposal on Tuesday, August 6 at the 1:00PM hearing at City Hall in Room 400. We estimate that this item will be heard around 4PM.

Join us in speaking out for solutions to keep us safe in the crosswalk. We’ll share talking points and say hello at City Hall. Here’s the meeting agenda. We think this item (#13) will go on around 4PM.

We need all the protection we can get when we’re walking. No-turn-on-red is a crucial layer to bring to the most dangerous intersections.
