The ‘Great Walkway’ is safe for now. Get out there!

 In Uncategorized

Great news: on May 9, the Coastal Commission voted unanimously to uphold the permit that allows the pilot of car-free space on weekends on the Great Highway through December 2025.

A vocal minority who oppose this car-free space have been trying to appeal the permit. But this effort has now failed at the Board of Appeals and the Coastal Commision.

The takeaway: what we like to call the ‘Great Walkway’ should be safe through the end of the pilot in 2025.

What then? Walk SF wants this incredibly important space for pedestrians to continue indefinitely, with a secure future like we now have for JFK Promenade.

The exact timing of the public process deciding the long-term fate of the Great Highway is unknown, but will happen before the pilot ends and will include a vote by the Board of Supervisors. Walk SF will absolutely be part of the campaign to save the Great Walkway.

Thank you to so many of you for helping defend this incredibly important space for pedestrians with your emails and public comments.

And a huge thanks to our friends at the Great Highway Park for leading the effort to envision and protect this oceanside open space for all.

Check out their beautiful new website and find upcoming events, from chair yoga to beach cleanups to live music.
