Your voice needed NOW to protect car-free space on the Great Highway

At the end of 2022, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted 9 to 2 to continue car-free space on the Great Highway on weekends for the next 3 years as a pilot, with the approval of Mayor London Breed. And the San Francisco Planning Commission unanimously issued the Coastal Zone Permit for the ‘Upper Great Highway pilot project.’

Walk SF supported and celebrated this win. Like JFK Promenade, this was one of the silver linings of the pandemic. The ‘Great Walkway’ (as we like to call it) has proven a popular, needed, and incredible place for people.

But someone has filed an appeal of the Coastal Zone Permit – and tomorrow the San Francisco Board of Appeals will decide whether or not to reject that appeal.

Please call or Zoom into the Wednesday, February 7 hearing to make public comment, or send an email to boardofappeals@sfgov.org before the hearing.

• Ask Commissioners to please uphold the Planning Commission’s unanimous determination to issue the Coastal Zone Permit for the Upper Great Highway pilot project and reject appeals against it.
• Share why the car-free space on the Great Highway matters to you – and to our city’s sustainable transportation network, health, and climate resiliency.
