Tell Governor Newsom to sign AB 43 to save lives from dangerous speeds

We are thrilled that Assembly Bill 43, which would allow cities to set speed limits based on safety, is on the Governor’s desk.

Governor Newsom is expected to consider this lifesaving, commonsense legislation within the next week, which is why we need to flood him with support for AB 43 now!

Dear Governor Newsom,

Please sign AB 43 into law.

Speed kills. Again and again here in California. Three Californians die every day in speed-related crashes. And the threat is growing. The rise of dangerous speeds is attributed to the significant spike in traffic deaths in 2020, and disproportionately takes lives in low-income, Black, and Latinx communities.

Due to an antiquated California law, speeds have been set inappropriately high for decades on city streets with significant numbers of vulnerable people. Deadly speeds have compounded the inequities in traffic safety for low-income neighborhoods and neighborhoods of color.
 
It’s as simple as this: speed limits should be set based on safety and who’s using them. Instead, speed limits are currently set based on how fast drivers are going, which has led us down a very dangerous path of ever-increasing speed limits.

AB 43 would allow cities to set speed limits based on safety so they appropriately reflect high numbers of crashes and high numbers of vulnerable road users. This bill will only allow cities to be able to reduce limits by about 5 MPH. But that 5 MPH difference is often the difference between life and death. Please sign AB 43.
