Vote YES on Measure K for a coastal park and promenade
A once-in-lifetime opportunity
San Francisco voters have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a new oceanfront park by transforming a road to nowhere into a people-first coastal park and promenade.
Measure K, which is on the November 5 ballot, asks voters to make permanent – and 7 days a week – car-free space on the Upper Great Highway. This has already been in place on weekends since 2021 as a pilot – and proven incredibly successful, becoming the third most visited park space in San Francisco.
For decades, having vehicle traffic on the Upper Great Highway has meant that pedestrians can only walk on the narrow, hilly path next to traffic – not next to the beach. The beach itself isn’t an option to walk on for anyone with a stroller, wheelchair, or mobility limitations.
Making the Upper Great Highway for people versus fast-moving traffic would finally connect our city with one of its most spectacular resources: the Pacific coast. And once this is actually a permanent park, so much is possible. Check out this rendering:
In a city where an average of three people are hit every day while walking, we need significant, safe spaces for all ages and abilities to enjoy without fear of dangerous traffic. JFK Promenade has been such a gift to our city and future generations, and Ocean Beach Park would build on this positive, climate-friendly direction for San Francisco.
Let’s seize this opportunity! Many people don’t know about Measure K yet. We need your help getting the word out to voters ASAP.
Get involved
Walk SF will be spreading the word about Measure K at the Mission Farmers Market every Thursday from 4:00-7:00PM leading up to the election.
Walk SF is also collaborating with Kid Safe SF and the SF Bike Coalition to host a huge door knocking event for Yes on K on Saturday, October 5 at 10:00AM. We need as many people as possible.
