Last push for a people-first Market Street – weigh in at the August 27 open house!

 In Uncategorized

Step by step, we’re moving closer to our vision for a people-first Market Street, where half a million people walk every day.

The City’s Better Market Street plan is set to be approved within weeks. Now is the time to voice your support for the strongest possible project and getting #CarsOffMarket this year!

Once the plan is approved, the transformative changes we’ve been asking for can finally move forward, which includes removing private vehicles from Market Street, all the way from Steuart Street near the Ferry Building to Franklin Street.

SF Department of Public Works is hosting a community open house on Tuesday, August 27 from 6:30-7:30 PM to look the Better Market Street project’s options for east of Octavia Boulevard.

We need you to add your voice for the strongest possible project for pedestrians!

The original plan would restrict downtown-bound private vehicles on Market Street starting at Van Ness Street, but the “design alternative” would restrict downtown-bound private vehicles on Market Street starting two blocks earlier, at Franklin Street (hooray!).

There’s also “design alternative” for westbound on Market, which includes having commercial vehicles turn off at Hayes Street. This would make the Van Ness and Market intersection much less hectic for everyone (and reduce the chance for crashes in the first place; you can get all the details here).

We know that intersections along Market Street are already dangerous for pedestrians, and there will be even more people walking on Market as our city grows. That’s why we support both design alternatives. Join us in urging the City to choose them! Let us know you can be there by sending an email to brian@walksf.org.
