What do people walking on 6th Street want? We asked.

 In Actions, Engineering

Yesterday morning, my Walk SF colleagues and I headed to the corner of 6th Street and Jessie to talk with the people who live, work, and walk on 6th Street.

Why? Because the City is in the final planning stages of the 6th Street Pedestrian Safety Project – and we wanted to find out which proposed improvements people are most excited about.

Over the course of a few hours, we had dozens of conversations and collected over 85 postcards from community members to send to the SFMTA.

We heard strong support for wider sidewalks, greenery, safer intersections, and better lighting on 6th Street. We also heard a consistent desire for benches and more public spaces for people to gather and spend time together.

But delivering those wider sidewalks and gathering space will only be possible if the SFMTA approves the 6th Street Pedestrian Safety Project with one less lane of traffic.

This “road diet” is part of the project now – but it faces opposition. Join us in urging the SFMTA to adopt truly comprehensive safety improvements for 6th Street.
