Tell the SFMTA: Stand strong for pedestrian safety in the Geary Rapid Project

Change is afoot for one of San Francisco’s most dangerous streets for pedestrians: Geary Boulevard.

Today, when you cross Geary, you are eight times as likely to be hit by a vehicle as on an average city street.

That could change dramatically if, as part of the Geary Rapid Project improving bus service on this major transit route, the City also makes proposed pedestrian improvements to Geary.  These would go on Geary between Market and Stanyan Streets. The proposed fixes include:

• Eight new pedestrian median refuges, providing a safe place for people walking to rest or wait, if needed, while crossing the street.
  
• New corner bulb-outs at 18 intersections, which will shorten crossing distances, make people walking more visible to drivers, and slow turning vehicles.
  
• Traffic calming throughout the corridor, via the removal of vehicle lanes or the creation of bus-only lanes.
  
• New marked crossings at Peace Plaza, Webster Street, Steiner Street, and Buchanan.
  

These improvements are critical.

But it is not certain that they will stay in the project — unless we all speak up.

On Tuesday, August 21, 2018, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) will vote on whether or not to approve these plans.

We need your help to ensure that the proposed pedestrian safety changes are part of the approved project.
