Peak2Peak 2024: celebrating 20 years of hills and thrills (PHOTOS!)

 In Uncategorized

Last Saturday marked Walk SF’s 20th annual Peak2Peak, and what a way to celebrate two decades of breathtaking views, ear-to-ear smiles, and quad-busting hills. Over 300 participants laced up their boots and hit the streets (and trails) of San Francisco. Whether you joined us or missed out, here’s a recap of the day that made us fall in love with San Francisco all over again.

10 miles, 10 peaks, and a whole lotta “I’ve never been here before!”

Just when you thought Peak2Peak had done it all after 20 years – surprise!

This year’s route swapped out some of the usual suspects (sorry, Twin Peaks) and took a detour through some less-traversed wonderful neighborhoods, like Sunnyside and Miraloma. We had many long-time San Franciscans confessing, “Wow, I’ve never been here before!” And we had a friendly resident in Sunnyside shout, “Thanks for including our neighborhood!”

The route included more trails, testing our grit and the grip of our soles on Mt. Davidson and Mt. Sutro, but especially through the muddy gauntlet that the Troop 88 Trail became in Laguna Honda.

For the grand finale, we finished strong on JFK Promenade, where drinks and congratulations flowed at the Whale’s Tail wine and beer garden.

300+ humans, cute dogs, and one very special guest

We had participants from all over the Bay, plus international ‘walk stars.’ Top prize for the longest journey made went to a mother-daughter team from Switzerland who planned their entire trip to San Francisco around Peak2Peak! Cute canines came out in record numbers for the 20th, too. But our VIP of the day was Karl the Fog. Our wispy friend stuck with us for much of the day, transforming our trek into a scene straight out of a moody noir film. Less views, but classic and beautiful San Francisco nonetheless.

A standing ovation for our A-team

We couldn’t have pulled this off without our phenomenal team of volunteers. They made everything run smoothly, from check-in to snack and lunch breaks to merch sales. You are our heroes!

Huge props to our expert walk leaders who safely shepherded us with energy and enthusiasm. You are the magic ingredient that brings Peak2Peak to life.

Please raise a glass to Karen Rhodes and the WalkLab team for designing and testing this year’s route – an unforgettable 10 miles, 10 peaks. You’ve outdone yourselves yet again!

Many thanks to Andronico’s, Ghirardelli, JAMBAR, Other Avenues, and Safeway for their donations to keep everyone powered up and hydrated.

And finally, we’re deeply grateful to our sponsors for their incredibly generous support of Walk SF’s events. (Contact Guy at guy@walksf.org if you’re already interested in sponsoring our 2025 events!)

Peak2Peak’s true purpose: making our streets safer

While we were climbing hills and snapping selfies, we kept in mind the real reason we were walking: to make San Francisco’s streets safe for everyone. Every day on average, three people in San Francisco are hit while walking, and that’s three too many. Walk SF is here to change that, and proceeds from every Peak2Peak ticket sold goes straight to making our streets safer.

Peak2Peak is our longest and most beloved fundraiser, and we’re so grateful to all participants and volunteers for making it a success.
