Channeling Grief into Action
As Families for Safe Streets members, we are banding together to channel our grief into action so no other person has to face the same devastation that we have.
For too long, traffic deaths and severe injuries have been viewed as inevitable. But in fact, they are preventable and should be treated as such. That’s why we always say “crash” – not “accident.” Streets can be designed and enforced in proven ways to protect lives, and that’s what we advocate fiercely for.
If you’re someone who’s been personally impacted by a traffic crash, we hope you’ll join us in speaking out for change. Our voices bring a unique and powerful perspective to the safe streets movement. We’ll help you find ways to be an advocate that are comfortable for you.

We host this annual event with Walk SF to honor the people hurt and killed in traffic crashes each year. The event is also a key platform for us to hold city leaders accountable to ending severe and fatal traffic crashes. If there’s one action to take, we hope you’ll join us at World Day of Remembrance for Traffic Victims in November.
We successfully gained a sponsor for California’s first-ever speed safety camera bill, AB 342. Though the bill ultimately didn’t make it out of the Assembly Transportation Committee, bringing this proven life-saving technology to the Bay Area continues to be an advocacy priority for us.
Our stories have the power to change how people think about preventing traffic crashes and spark action to fix dangerous streets. We share our stories with reporters, elected officials, and at events like World Day of Remembrance for Traffic Victims. Read some of our stories.
We visit fatal crash sites to acknowledge and shine a light on the precious lives lost to traffic violence. We connect with community members, and talk about why and how crashes are preventable.
We use our voices to support policies and funding to prevent traffic crashes. From giving public comment to writing opinion pieces to standing on the steps of City Hall, we bring our unique perspective on traffic crashes to demand change.
We are proud to be part of a national Families for Safe Streets movement. This allows us to learn from similar groups, plus unite our voices on key issues. Traffic violence needs to be a nationwide conversation. We’ll help make this happen however we can, like this action at a presidential candidate forum!
