Dear Chair Holden and Speaker Rendon,
Please move AB 645 (Speed Safety Cameras Pilot Program) to a full vote by the Assembly to save lives from dangerous speeds. Dangerous speed is the #1 cause of severe and fatal crashes in California. Three Californians are killed every day in speed-related crashes, with thousands severely injured. It doesn’t have to be like this. New York City and more than 100 cities around the United States are using speed safety cameras to save lives. In zones where cameras were installed, fatalities declined by 55% and excessive speeding violations by 60%. AB 645 would allow six cities (San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Jose, Oakland, Glendale, and Long Beach) to pilot speed safety cameras around schools and on known-dangerous streets with strong equity and privacy considerations built into the bill. With traffic fatalities up dramatically in recent years and dangerous speeds continuing to rise, every tool is needed to protect all of us on the roads – especially our most vulnerable. Please pass the life-saving bill AB 645 out of the Appropriations Committee so the full Assembly can vote on this urgent legislation. Sincerely,
