SUMMARY:Support the 'Street Safety Act' on Monday\, September 8
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, September 8\, District 7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar’s ‘Street Safety Act’ will be voted on in the Land Use and Transportation Committee before going to the full Board of Supervisors for a vote the next day. \nThe Street Safety Act recommits San Francisco to Vision Zero and includes a suite of targeted actions for key agencies to design and enforce streets for safety.  \nThis is everything from leaning into automated enforcement\, evolving the Vision Zero approach to be more systematic\, reforming the Residential Traffic Calming program\, and requiring that if a street is paved or repainted\, it’s left with more safety fixes than it started with. There are deadlines\, public dashboards\, and some serious red-tape cutting so street safety projects happen faster. Read more. \nWe want a unanimous YES vote! Let’s show City leaders we want them to take real and meaningful action now to make our streets safe.     \nPlease join us in showing a ton of support for the Street Safety Act at a crucial moment:   \n\n12:30 – 1:00PM: Join Supervisor Myrna Melgar\, Walk SF\, partner organizations\, and people like YOU for a rally on the steps of City Hall.\n1:30PM: Attend and speak in support of the Street Safety Act at the Land Use and Transportation hearing. The Land Use hearing is the only chance to give public comment in support of this much-needed resolution.\n\nRSVP now\n\n\nCan’t make it on September 8? Email your support for the Street Safety Act to the Land Use and Transportation Committee now. \nQuestions? Contact Malena at malena@walksf.org

SUMMARY:Protest Mayor Lurie returning cars to Market Street
DESCRIPTION:Before going car-free\, five of the city’s ten most dangerous intersections were on Market Street\, and just crossing to the Muni platform could be a gamble. \nBut tomorrow\, Mayor Lurie will allow Waymo\, Uber Black\, and Lyft Black to start driving on the car-free section of Market Street. This opens the door for even more vehicle traffic. \nWalk SF is joining partners in protesting this unacceptable step backward for our city. \nWhen: Tuesday\, August 26\, from 5:00 – 6:00PM \nWhere: The northwest corner of the intersection of Market and Montgomery Streets \nWhat: We’ll walk the crosswalks with “Market Street for the People” signs and show Mayor Lurie that the way forward for San Francisco’s downtown is more foot traffic\, not vehicle traffic. \nCan’t make it? Email Mayor Lurie now \n\nWith the removal of private vehicles on Market Street\, Muni travel times improved by up to 14% and traffic collisions went down by 40%. \nWe can’t go back to how things were before.  \nLet’s demand that Mayor Lurie reverse this decision and keep Market car-free tomorrow! This is about who our city’s “main street” is for: people.

SUMMARY:Give public comment in support of a bold resolution for traffic safety
DESCRIPTION:With 2024 the deadliest year in a decade for traffic fatalities\, we need City leaders and agencies to do everything in their power to make streets safer. \nOn Tuesday\, July 29\, Supervisor Myrna Melgar will introduce a bold resolution to bring meaningful action and accountability to traffic safety.  \nWith the City’s Vision Zero policy and plan expired\, this legislation is needed now to get San Francisco to focus on safe streets in a new way. \nPlease join us in giving public comment at the Board of Supervisors meeting at 5:00PM in support of Supervisor Melgar’s resolution and to show the urgency on this public safety crisis.  \n\nWe will provide talking points and keep you updated on the agenda\, plus give you a sticker when you arrive to show solidarity.\n\nRSVP now\n\nThank you so much for standing up for safe streets with us at this pivotal moment.\n\nQuestions? SUMMARY:Celebrate safer intersections in District 5
DESCRIPTION:‘Daylighting’ is kicking off in District 5: let’s celebrate!\nOn Monday\, July 28 at 12:00PM at the intersection of Broderick and Hayes\, Supervisor Bilal Mahmood\, the SFMTA\, and community groups will celebrate the start of District 5 getting ‘daylighting’ painted at all intersections in the next couple months. \nCome get a donut\, meet your neighbors\, and hear how streets in District 5 are being made safer for everyone! No RSVP required. \n‘Daylighting’ prevents 1 in 3 traffic crashes\nDaylighting prevents parking at certain parts of the intersection to ensure clear sightlines for everyone. \nA new California daylighting law means it’s now illegal for drivers to park within 20 feet of any marked or unmarked crosswalk at the corners where vehicles face the crosswalk. \nThe SFMTA is painting daylighting zones with red paint at intersections citywide so drivers know not to park there and this important safety solution can help prevent crashes. Learn more about daylighting here.

SUMMARY:Rally for 'Safe Streets\, Strong SF' on Tuesday\, April 29 at City Hall
DESCRIPTION:Rally for ‘Safe Streets\, Strong SF’ on Tuesday\, April 29 at City Hall\nIt’s now been more than 100 days since the City’s Vision Zero policy expired. We’ll then go into City Hall for the 2pm Board of Supervisors meeting to demand for a bold new Vision Zero policy and plan\, with the funding and accountability needed for it to succeed. RSVP for the rally. \nCan’t make it? Email Mayor Lurie now to commit to and deliver bold action on Vision Zero.  \n\nWhere: San Francisco City Hall\nWhen: Tuesday\, April 29\, 2025\, 12:00PM\n\nWear your Walk SF t-shirt and grab one of our signs when you arrive. \nThe rally will be followed by a Board of Supervisors meeting in City Hall\, Legislative Chamber\, Room 250\, starting at 2PM. Feel free to join us there in making public comment in support of safe streets and a strong San Francisco! \nBanner Image: Emily Huston

SUMMARY:Celebrate the launch of lifesaving speed cameras in San Francisco on March 20
DESCRIPTION:It’s official: San Francisco new speed camera program will launch on Thursday\, March 20\, 2025. We are ready to celebrate this longfought win for safe streets! \nSpeed cameras save lives by changing driver behavior\, which is crucial given that speeding is the #1 cause of severe and fatal crashes in San Francisco. That’s why Walk SF and traffic victims worked for eight years to pass legislation allowing speed cameras to be used in California.  \nWe’re proud and grateful that San Francisco is the first city in California to pilot this proven technology. We applaud City leaders and agencies for leading the way!  \nLet’s celebrate this win together – and show that San Franciscans support bold action to make all our streets safe.  \nYou’re invited to two speed camera celebrations on Thursday\, March 20: \n\nA celebration and press conference at Joe DiMaggio Playground in North Beach from 9:30 to 10:30AM with Mayor Lurie\, safe streets partners\, and advocates like you! \nA happy hour with Mayor Lurie hosted by Walk San Francisco and San Francisco Bay Area Families for Safe Streets from 6:00 to 7:30PM at The Willows at Folsom & 12th in SOMA\, just a few blocks from a new speed camera at Folsom & 10th. (The venue is accessible by the 27\, 22\, 9\, and 9R Muni lines. There is also a public parking lot directly next door.)\n\nRSVP for one or both events  \nYour RSVP helps us plan successfully and is greatly appreciated! Questions? SUMMARY:Celebrate speed cameras in the Richmond District
DESCRIPTION:We couldn’t be more excited that speed cameras are coming to 33 locations in San Francisco in upcoming weeks. \nIf you share our excitement\, join us Wednesday\, February 19 from 8:30-9:00AM in the Inner Richmond neighborhood.  \nLet’s show that San Franciscans support real solutions to address dangerous speeding!  \nWho: Everyone who’s excited about this milestone for safe streets! Kids are welcome. \nWhat: Celebrate with free donuts\, coffee\, and orange juice.   \nWhen: Wednesday\, February 19 from 8:30-9:00AM. Short remarks at 8:45AM by: Walk SF executive director Jodie Medeiros and Jenny Yu\, a member of Families for Safe Streets whose mom was hit by a speeding driver in the Richmond District.   \nWhere: The intersection of 7th Avenue & Geary Boulevard (northwest corner)\, where one of the first speed cameras has been installed. \nPlease RSVP so we have enough donuts!\nThis event is hosted by Walk San Francisco and San Francisco Bay Area Families for Safe Streets. \nSpeed cameras save lives\nSpeeding continues to be the #1 cause of severe and fatal traffic crashes in San Francisco. The faster a driver is going\, the more likely a crash is – and the deadlier the consequences. \n Over 100 cities in the United States have already embraced speed cameras with great success\, including Portland\, Washington D.C.\, New York City\, and Seattle. Speed cameras can reduce the number of severe and fatal crashes by as much as 51%. \nThat’s why with the support of our members\, Walk San Francisco worked together with traffic victims for more than six years to pass state legislation allowing lifesaving speed cameras to be legal in California. On October 23\, 2023\, Governor Newsom signed Assembly Bill 645 allowing San Francisco and five other cities to pilot the use of speed cameras. \nSpeed cameras are now coming to 33 locations in San Francisco – and installation has started. We are thrilled for this hard-won solution to be on our streets! \nQuestions about the event? Contact Blair at blair@walksf.org.

SUMMARY:Vision Zero Coalition Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Vision Zero Coalition – led by Walk SF and made up of community-based organizations\, nonprofits\, and neighborhood groups that care about traffic safety – continues to be a powerful and unified voice for change. \nFounded when the City first adopted its Vision Zero policy in 2014\, the Vision Zero Coalition has shaped and won stronger policies for safe streets over the year\, like this. \nWith the City reaching its ten-year point since adopting Vision Zero this year\, the Coalition’s voice is more important than ever. We need the next decade to bring much bolder\, faster changes. \nThat’s why if you are connected with a community-based organization\, a nonprofit\, or neighborhood group that cares about traffic safety we want you at our next monthly meeting of the Vision Zero Coalition. New attendees are always welcome; note that this meeting is for folks who are representing a group! \nWhat: The October monthly meeting for the Vision Zero Coalition \nWhen: Wednesday\, October 30\, 2024 5:00pm-6:30pm \nWhere: TBD but likely Walk SF’s office in the Mission. Zoom-in option as well\, but in-person is strongly encouraged. Food and drinks provided. \nContact Malena at malena@walksf.org for more information.
