An Open Letter to Mayor Lee from Walk SF:

How Mayor Lee Can Make Smart Investments in Safer Streets in 2012

At Walk San Francisco’s member bash last month, Mayor Ed Lee celebrated making San Francisco the first big city in the state to help kids walk to school by creating 15-mph zones at 60 schools, out of 180 to come.

“We will, in our lifetimes, get to zero pedestrian deaths,” declared the Mayor, calling for “experimenting out of the box with every possible idea to make streets safer.”

The mayor set a bold vision for San Francisco, and an “out of the box” approach may be just what we need to reach it. But to stand by his commitment, Mayor Lee must provide the leadership our city needs to make smart, immediate investments to improve pedestrian safety in 2012.

What will it be like? Think: Historical tour meets pub quiz meets New Yorker cartoon caption contest….

This lively Walk SF fundraiser will combine a specially designed tour of the Hayes Creek watershed with a cooperative game that offers competitive deduction and recall. Joel Pomerantz of Thinkwalks will lead a walk from Hayes Green to Alamo Square that incorporates photos, maps, and clues for you to figure out. Topics will cover historical geography, urban development, transportation, urban agriculture, and population flows that together reflect the boomtown excitement of San Francisco.

As we go, we’ll be playing a new game called Caption WALC: “Walk Around, Link Clues.” (We told you it was nerdy!) Team up and apply the history you learn about during the walk, write the best caption on a historical photo, and win marvelous prizes! You can try your luck with a raffle, too. Every dollar raised will go toward Walk SF’s work to make our city’s streets better, safer, more fun places to walk.

Where: The walk will start at Patricia’s Green (at the corner of Hayes and Octavia). We’ll end at a local bar for optional socializing, prize-trading, rehashing your winning caption, etc.

When: 1PM, Saturday, May 7 (until about 4PM)

Cost: $35 Walk SF members; $45 non-members — please RSVP below!

Schwag: Win prizes for the best captions — we’ll have a raffle too for those non-competitive types. Prizes include gift certificates from local stores and restaurants.

Join Walk SF next Sunday, April 24, as we connect the upscale and the downtrodden in the Tenderloin, Polk Gulch, and Lower Nob Hill.

Walk SF member and urban planner Michael Jacinto will guide us through the changes afoot in one of the West Coast’s oldest and most storied walking neighborhoods. We’ll explore the transitions between Union Square’s upscale retail and affordable housing developments, find little-known pockets of open space and historic Nob Hill homes, and make our way along the transit and retail corridors of Geary and Polk Streets.

Sunday, April 24th

1pm – about 3pm

Free for members! ($10 for non-members)

Please RSVP

We’ll start at Hallidie Plaza, above the Powell BART and Muni station. (Look for folks in “I Walk SF” tshirts!) There will be some hills, but we will adjust our pace to accommodate all walkers. We’ll end on Van Ness with access to the 47 and 49 bus lines.

Join us for what promises to be a very varied walk through the contrasts and contradictions at the heart of our city!

Permeable Sidewalk Projects in the Mission District Walking Tour
Saturday, July 12th, 10:30am
Starting at Shotwell Greenway (Shotwell Street between 17th and 18th Streets)
Take a guided tour of Plant*SF’s permeable landscaped sidewalk projects in the Mission District. An innovative sustainable urban infrastructure practice, permeable landscaped sidewalks demonstrate one approach to reducing storm loads on the combined city sewer system, by removing significant portions of formerly existing concrete sidewalks, which instead of entering the sewer, permits rain water to permeate the exposed soil and nourish plants. When this method is implemented throughout the city, it will result in a significant reduction on the currently overloaded sewer system, and restore the city’s urban hydrology. These sidewalks also create species habitat and provide beautiful walking spaces.
